About Us

Flying Fish Cove from AboveASCI was established in November 2009 in response to the growing number of asylum seekers in detention on Christmas Island.
Christmas Island is extremely remote; it is 2030 kilometres northwest of Perth and 320 kilometres south of Jakarta, and airflights from the mainland cost over $1500 return.
This distance not only compounds the isolation felt by people in detention, but prevents mainland Australians from developing an understanding of the plight of asylum seekers separate to what is being portrayed in the media.
ASCI seek to find ways to support those in detention as they await the outcome of their protection visa applications.
